About Troop 688

Background

MEET TROOP 688
Troop 688 was first chartered in March 1985. In the twenty years since the troop was organized, the troop has been very active. We are proud to note that 35 scouts have earned the rank of Eagle! Over the last four years, the troop has maintained a membership level of approximately 35 scouts and over 25 registered adult leaders.

OUR MISSION is to provide an opportunity for young men from the local area, together with their families, to learn responsibility, teamwork, integrity, and leadership through the principles and programs of the Boy Scouts of America.

Administration

Boy Scout Troop 688 represents Rancho Bernardo and Poway. The troop belongs to the Black Mountain District of the San Diego-Imperial Council.

OUR SPONSOR
Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary is the chartering organization for Troop 688. The Rotary is an active supporter of the troop and contributes financially to Eagle projects and other special needs, and is present at many troop functions. Our troop supports the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary by participating in some of their community service projects.

MEETINGS

Troop 688 is committed to maintaining a boy-led troop. Scouts have the advantage of learning by doing. They are encouraged to become independent and responsible by trying new things, developing and applying new skills and supporting one another. The Patrol Leader Council (PLC) plans and executes all troop meetings and is also responsible for elections and management of troop officers and patrols. Patrols are organized loosely by age, rank, and ability level, with all younger patrols led by a senior member of the Troop. The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters guide and mentor the scouts. Their focus is to provide specialized training and the final authority in matters of safety and conduct. The parents’ committee meets monthly in lieu of the regular troop and attends to the business aspects of the troop. All parents are asked to attend and participate by volunteering in parent committee activities. No regular (monthly) dues are required and most outings have nominal costs.

Programs and Activities

OUTDOOR PROGRAM
Troop 688 presents a broad spectrum of fun and challenging outdoor activities year round. Each year, the outdoor program includes two long-term resident summer camps, a backpack, car camping, and a winter ski trip.

The troop owns a trailer with six complete patrol boxes and other camping equipment. Each patrol box is equipped with a stove, lantern, propane gas stove and necessary cooking utensils.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Service projects are an important component of the troop’s program. Scouts assist with projects and activities for the Rotary and other community groups. We participate in the Rancho Bernardo Fourth of July Parade, Poway’s Adopt-A-Trail program and have adopted a portion of West Ridge Trail near Chaparral Elementary School.

FUNDRAISING
Fundraisers include an annual popcorn sale drive, regularly scheduled aluminum can collection for recycling and other activities. Proceeds from fundraising activities are contributed directly to each boy’s scout account. Scout accounts may be used to pay for outings and summer camp.
